Invisalign® Q & A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear plastic aligners to move teeth into their proper alignment instead of relying on metal brackets and wires. Invisalign® offers systems for both teens and adults, and it’s becoming a very popular option for patients who want to enjoy straighter teeth and more attractive smiles without the hassles of traditional braces.

What Happens During My Treatment with Invisalign®?

Invisalign® treatment uses custom-made aligners, or special trays that fit snugly over the teeth. Treatment begins with impressions of the teeth that are sent to the lab where the aligners will be made. At the lab, the impressions are scanned into a computer that uses special software to create a series of 3D images that “map out” the movements the teeth will need to make to come into alignment. Then the images and “map” are used to create the customized series of aligners. During treatment, aligners are worn in a specific sequence. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks before being “swapped” for the next aligner in the sequence. Patients visit the office about every six weeks to make sure their treatment is progressing well. Most treatments can be completed in 18 months or less.

What are the Advantages of Invisalign® Compared to Traditional Braces?

Most patients prefer Invisalign® to traditional braces for two reasons: They’re made of clear plastic so they’re virtually invisible while they’re being worn, and they can be removed when eating and caring for teeth. That means there are no dietary restrictions and it’s much easier to brush and floss teeth during treatment. Additionally, Invisalign® aligners are smooth so there are no wires or brackets to irritate gums and soft tissues and create sore spots. And finally, since the aligners are custom made for each patient, treatment typically can be completed more quickly compared to treatment with traditional braces.

Is the Cost of Invisalign® Covered by Dental Insurance?

Coverage varies from one dental insurance plan to another. Our office staff can help patients determine their coverage levels and identify financing options to help make the cost of treatment more affordable.
