Laser Gum Therapy Q & A

What is Laser Gum Therapy?

Also called laser periodontal therapy or LANAP (laser-assisted new attachment procedure), laser gum therapy is a state-of-the-art approach for the treatment of moderate to severe gum disease (periodontal disease or periodontitis). The precise control afforded by laser dentistry enables dentists to treat gum disease and eradicate disease-causing bacteria without the need for more invasive approaches that use scalpels and other instruments to remove diseased tissue. Gum disease is the top cause of tooth loss among adults in the U.S., and laser gum therapy is a simpler, more accurate and more comfortable treatment option compared to traditional techniques.

What Happens During a Laser Gum Treatment?

Prior to treatment, gums will be numbed using a local or topical agent to reduce discomfort. The laser device uses a very tiny tip to dispense beams of laser energy precisely where they’re needed, removing inflamed tissue and destroying harmful bacteria. Laser therapy can be combined with root scaling to remove tartar that clings to the tooth roots and provides an ideal hiding spot for bacteria. The heat energy of the laser seals tissue as it’s treated, preserving healthy tissue and reducing or eliminating bleeding so sutures are not necessary. Once treatment is complete, healthy gum tissue will have the healthy environment it needs to be able to reattach to the tooth surfaces, preventing future infiltration of tissue-destroying bacteria.

What are the Benefits of Laser Gum Therapy?

Laser gum surgery reduces tissue damage associated with traditional gum surgery procedures, leaving more of the healthy gum tissue intact. Bleeding, swelling and discomfort following the procedure are minimized, and there’s no need for sedation during treatment. And finally, recovery and healing times may be significantly reduced compared to traditional treatment techniques.

Is the Cost of LANAP Covered by Insurance?

Most dental insurance plans provide at least partial coverage for periodontal disease treatments, including laser-assisted treatments. Our office staff can help each patient determine their level of coverage while also identifying financing options to make the cost of care more affordable.
