Teeth Whitening Q & A

What Causes Teeth to Turn Yellow or Become Discolored?

Poor oral hygiene is one reason teeth can begin to look dingy and discolored, but other common causes include tobacco use and the foods and beverages we eat. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries and spices, and natural and artificial food colorings can all take a toll on teeth. Highly acidic foods, like tomatoes and citrus fruits and juices, temporarily soften enamel, making it easier for these stains to penetrate. These stains occur in the superficial layers of teeth and can be treated with professional teeth whitening. Discoloration in the interior of the tooth occurs as a result of damage to the tooth pulp or from certain diseases or medications. This type of discoloration requires a veneer or crown to correct.

What Happens During Professional Teeth Whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is best performed after a dental cleaning to ensure the whitening agent is absorbed equally across the entire tooth surface. Our system uses a professional-strength whitening gel and a special light to activate the gel. During the whitening treatment, a soft retaining device will be used to keep the lips away from the teeth so the whitening gel isn’t wiped away and to ensure the special activating light reaches all the tooth surfaces. Once the gel is applied, the light is applied for a specific period of time to enable the gel to penetrate. The gel may be applied several times during the treatment, which takes about an hour to complete. Results are immediately visible and last for 12 to 18 months.

How Does Professional Whitening Compare to Over-the-Counter Teeth Bleaching Products?

Professional whitening uses gels that penetrate more deeply into the tooth surface and provide better coverage for more consistent results. The results of in-office teeth whitening also last much longer, and treatment can be completed in just one hour compared to the days or weeks required by over-the-counter teeth bleaching products. Finally, since professional whitening treatments can be completed in one visit, any minor sensitivity issues that may occur during whitening will be significantly reduced compared to treatments that take much longer to complete.
