Veneers Q & A

What are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is an extremely thin “shell” that covers the front (visible) portion of the tooth to address an array of cosmetic issues. Veneers are tinted to match surrounding teeth, and their translucent design mimics the reflective qualities of teeth so they look completely natural.

When are Veneers Used?

Dental veneers can be used to correct many aesthetic issues, including:

  • Teeth with interior darkening or discoloration that cannot be effectively treated with bleaching
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are crooked
  • Teeth that appear too short
  • Teeth with worn or uneven edges

Veneers offer immediate improvement in the appearance of a smile, and because they're so verstatile they're often used in complete smile makeovers to address multiple issues.

How is a Veneer Applied?

Veneers usually require two visits for placement. During the first visit, a very small amount of tooth material is removed from the surface of the tooth to provide room for the veneer. Removing a small amount of tooth material ensures the veneer rests flush with the surfaces of neighboring teeth without extending beyond or above the tooth’s edges. An impression will be made of the tooth and sent to the lab where the veneer will be made, and a temporary veneer will be applied to the tooth to protect it in the meantime. The tint will also be selected during this visit. At the second office visit, the temporary veneer will be removed, the tooth’s surface will be carefully cleaned and the veneer will be applied using a very strong dental adhesive, then gently shaped so it fits comfortably and blends perfectly.

Is a Tooth Veneer Difficult to Care For?

No, veneers are durable and stain resistant, and they can be cared for just like natural teeth with regular brushing and flossing and routine trips to the dentist to ensure it remains in good shape. To prevent it from becoming damaged, avoid using the teeth as prying tools and rinse or brush after consuming foods or beverages that stain teeth.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

With proper care, a dental veneer can last for 10 years or longer. Consult with Dr. Rubin to learn best practices on how to keep your veneer in its best condition.
